Industry veteran and Pegasus Couriers Managing Director, Martin Smith, gives some tips and suggestions on what it takes to be a great courier driver. With more than 22 years of industry experience, here is what Martin has to say about anyone wanting to join the courier industry:

The courier and delivery industry in the UK is thriving, with a market worth around £15 billion and expected to keep growing. Despite the current cost of living challenges, various factors are driving this growth. For instance, UK manufacturers delivered 85 million parcels directly to consumers in 2022, and this year, there’s a projected 30% increase to over 110 million packages.

Moreover, the UK eCommerce market is set to hit £172.95 billion in 2023 and is forecasted to surpass £249 billion by 2027. Join the dynamic world of courier driving and be part of an industry that is on the rise!

So, what does it take for novices to become great delivery drivers?

Well, there is no one answer but a host of factors. However, over the years, I have noticed that those who work independently and cope well under pressure seem to love the job.

Other good skills include excellent customer service, problem-solving while on the move and being a good driver. A valid clean driver’s licence (with minimum to no penalties) is also an excellent benefit for a career delivery driver.

There is also a misconception that all delivery drivers need to know the areas they deliver. While it is advantageous, this is optional as, in today’s age, apps and satellite navigation are used to pre-map routes, making delivery far more straightforward.

Like in any industry, those with years of experience have already learnt the tricks of the trade and how to minimise delivery time and save fuel. Talent scouting and career progression are also possible, with several senior-level drivers progressing into roles such as lead drivers, driver trainers, support personnel, on-site and regional managers  – to name a few.

If you’re thinking about entering the industry, keep in mind that every company has a unique way of operating. If you’re considering a career at Pegasus Couriers, our recruitment team is here to guide and support you every step of the way.

If you thrive in a dynamic work environment, enjoy working independently, and excel in communication and customer service, take a look at our open delivery driver positions.
