Top tips for becoming a great delivery driver

Industry veteran and Pegasus Couriers Managing Director, Martin Smith, gives some tips and suggestions on what it takes to be a great courier driver. With more than 22 years of industry experience, here is what Martin has to say about anyone wanting to join the courier industry:

Being a courier driver is a great job and requires a mixture of both physical and mental skills. If you like being out & about and working in a fast-paced environment – a delivery driver could be for you.

The UK courier and delivery industry is worth roughly £15 billion and is expected to increase year-on-year – despite the current cost of living crisis. Like any industry, several sectors influence growth. For example, Statista shows that UK manufacturers delivered 85 million parcels direct-to-consumers in 2022. This year, the forecast is a 30% increase to over 110 million packages.

Also, the UK eCommerce market is expected to reach £172.95 billion in 2023 and even breach the £249 billion mark by 2027.

So, what does it take for novices to become great delivery drivers?

Well, there is no one answer but a host of factors. However, over the years, I have noticed that those who work independently and cope well under pressure seem to love the job.

Other good skills include excellent customer service, problem-solving while on the move and being a good driver. A valid clean driver’s licence (with minimum to no penalties) is also an excellent benefit for a career delivery driver.

There is also a misconception that all delivery drivers need to know the areas they deliver. While it is advantageous, this is optional as, in today’s age, apps and satellite navigation are used to pre-map routes, making delivery far more straightforward.

Like in any industry, those with years of experience have already learnt the tricks of the trade and how to minimise delivery time and save fuel. Talent scouting and career progression are also possible, with several senior-level drivers progressing into roles such as lead drivers, driver trainers, support personnel, on-site and regional managers  – to name a few.

Finally, each company operates differently, so if you consider joining the industry, ensure you get all your facts and details. At Pegasus Couriers, we have a recruitment team that offers advice and assistance to anyone wanting to join the industry.
